Catchup with Coach M - Edition 60 - Growth Starts With the Truth

As we approach the halfway mark of the year, it's the perfect time to pause and take an honest look at where we stand. Have the goals you set at the beginning of the year moved forward, stalled, or been forgotten entirely? In this article, I explore the importance of regular self-evaluation, the promises we make to ourselves, and why consistent movement, quality nutrition, and honest reflection are the foundations of personal growth, health, and lasting momentum. Mid-Year Check-In: Are You Still Showing Up for Your Goals? An honest Self Evaluation

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve spent some time doing something I believe we should all do more often: a genuine self-evaluation.

As we approach the 1st of June and the halfway mark of the year, I found myself asking some important questions:

  • Where am I in relation to the goals I set for 2026?

  • What has been accomplished?

  • Which boxes have been ticked?

  • What still needs attention?

  • What needs to be adjusted?

  • What have I not touched at all?

They aren’t always comfortable questions to answer, but they are necessary.

We spend a lot of time reviewing progress in our businesses, careers, and projects. We track results, analyse performance, and adjust our strategies when things are not working.

Yet when it comes to our own lives, health, and personal growth, many of us neglect that same level of honest assessment., A brutally honest self-evaluation.

Growth starts with awareness.

And awareness starts with honesty.

The Promises You Make to Yourself

I have spoken about this before.

When you promise yourself something, do you follow through?

When you say you are going to train, do you train?

When you commit to eating better, do you stick to it?

When you decide that recovery, sleep, or personal growth matters, do your actions reflect that decision?

The promises we keep to ourselves build self-trust.

Every time you follow through, your mind learns that your word means something. Your body learns that you will show up. Confidence grows because it is built on evidence, not motivation.

Motivation comes and goes.

Commitment remains and commitment grows momentum...MOMENTUM is one of the most power tools in growth you will ever have.

Twenty-Two Months of Intentional Movement

Many of you who have followed my journey know that in July 2024 I made a commitment to daily planned movement within the boundaries of my training plan.

Not daily punishment.

Not daily suffering.

Not daily high-intensity sessions.

Simply daily intentional movement.

The second half of 2025 and the first part of 2026 have largely been about recovery, rebuilding, and at times simply surviving some difficult challenges. Performance was not always the priority. Health was.

Yet one promise remained unchanged:

Move every day.

Today, that commitment is approaching 22 months.

Some days that movement is a structured training session.

Some days it is an easy walk.

Other days it is a relaxed swim, mobility work, or a gentle spin on the bike. Even thirty minutes of easy movement counts.

The goal was never to break myself down.

The goal was to build consistency.

Because movement is medicine.

Through every challenge, setback, and difficult period, movement has remained one of the constants that keeps me functioning. It provides structure, clears the mind, reduces stress, and helps maintain momentum when life becomes chaotic.

The objective was never perfection.

The objective was simply to keep showing up.

Movement Is Medicine. Nutrition Is Life.

Training alone is not enough.

Exercise without proper nutrition is like trying to build a house without a foundation.

For years I have believed in a simple principle:

Nutrition is king. Movement is queen.

Together they create the foundation for health, resilience, energy, and performance.

Movement stimulates adaptation.

Nutrition provides the resources for that adaptation.

Movement challenges the body.

Nutrition allows it to recover.

Movement improves physical and mental wellbeing.

Nutrition supports every system that makes that possible.

When these two work together, momentum follows.

And momentum is often the missing ingredient in personal growth.

The Bigger Question

While reviewing my goals, I realised that consistency in movement is only one piece of the puzzle.

There are:

  • short-term goals.

  • Medium-term goals.

  • Long-term goals.

  • Business goals.

  • Family goals.

  • Financial goals.

  • Performance goals.

Each one deserves the same honest review.

The first question is simple:

Did I show up?

The second question is where the real growth happens:

Did I show up in the way I intended to?

  • Did I bring the effort I promised myself?

  • Did I focus on the things that matter most?

  • Did I prioritise what I said was important?

  • Or did I allow distractions, excuses, procrastination, and comfort to take control?

Only you can answer those questions honestly.

And honesty is where progress begins.

Honest Reflection Is Not Self-Criticism

Many people confuse honest self-reflection with being hard on themselves.

They are not the same thing. An honest review is: not about tearing yourself down.

  • It is not about focusing on failures.

  • It is not about negative self-talk.

  • It is about collecting accurate information.

A good coach evaluates performance objectively.

A successful business reviews results objectively.

We should learn to do the same for ourselves.

  • Celebrate what is working.

  • Acknowledge where growth is happening.

  • Identify what needs attention.

  • Recognise where effort has been lacking.

Then make a plan to move forward.

  • No excuses.

  • No blame.

  • No self-sabotage.

  • Just honest feedback followed by constructive action.

Plans Change — Goals Don't Have To

Life changes.

Opportunities appear.

Challenges arrive unexpectedly.

Priorities shift.

The plan you created in January may need adjustment by June.

That is not failure.

That is life.

Being adaptable does not mean abandoning your goals.

It means adjusting your route while keeping your destination in sight.

Every three months I try to review my plans and goals. Not because everything needs changing, but because I want to remain intentional.

I ask myself:

  • Are my actions aligned with my priorities?

  • Is my training moving me forward?

  • Is my nutrition supporting recovery and performance?

  • What needs to change?

  • What needs more attention?

Regular check-ins help prevent drift and keep the bigger picture in focus.

Momentum Is Built on the Basics

We often search for complex solutions when the answer is usually much simpler.

  • Consistent movement.

  • Quality nutrition.

  • Adequate recovery.

  • Honest self-reflection.

  • Small daily actions repeated over time.

These are the cornerstones of momentum.

Not because they are exciting.

Not because they are easy.

But because they work.

The people who continue growing year after year are rarely the most talented. More often, they are the people willing to be honest with themselves while remaining committed to improvement.

They understand that success is not built on perfection.

It is built on consistency.

A Challenge for June

As we move into June, perhaps it is time for your own honest review.

Take an hour or maybe 2 or 3 will be needed

Pull out the goals you set at the beginning of the year.

Ask yourself:

  • What have I accomplished?

  • What habits have I maintained?

  • Where have I grown?

  • What have I neglected?

  • What needs adjusting?

  • What needs recommitment?

Most importantly, ask yourself:

Am I showing up for the life I said I wanted to create?

Because growth starts with honesty.

Movement creates momentum.

Nutrition fuels progress.

And when those two cornerstones are supported by self-awareness and accountability, meaningful change becomes possible.

The truth may not always be comfortable, but it will always point you in the direction of growth.

Remember... Real growth is rarely about dramatic breakthroughs. More often, it is built through small daily actions, honest self-assessment, and the willingness to adapt when life changes course. By regularly reviewing your goals, prioritising movement and nutrition, and staying accountable to the commitments you make to yourself, you create the momentum needed to move forward. As we enter the second half of the year, take the opportunity to reflect, reset where needed, and continue building the habits that support the life you want to create.
