Part 1 of 6: Time — Double or Triple Your Expectations

Welcome to Catch Up with Coach M!

This is Part 1 of a six-part series exploring the principles behind creating lasting results — not just reaching a goal, but building a lifestyle that allows you to maintain those results.

Whether you want to improve your health, lose weight, change your eating habits, become more active, build strength, improve your fitness or simply take better care of yourself, the principles remain the same. Lasting change requires more than a burst of motivation or a short-term plan. It requires a shift in how you think, the choices you make and the habits you practise every day.

Over the next six parts, we'll look at five key principles — time, patience, hard work, consistency and sacrifice — and bring them together in the final part to show how they can help you build a lifestyle that supports the person you want to become.

No magic tricks. No overnight transformations. Just honest conversations about what it takes to make change happen and, more importantly, make it last.

So, let's start with the first principle.

Time: Double or Triple Your Expectations

How long do you think it will take to get the results you want?

Now double it. Maybe even triple it.

I know that isn't what you want to hear. We live in a world where everything is expected to happen quickly. We want the weight to come off, our fitness to improve, our energy to return, our finances to improve and our habits to change — preferably by next week!

But meaningful change doesn't work like that.

Whether you want to lose weight, improve your health, become stronger, change your relationship with food, build a fitness routine or train for an endurance event, the principle remains the same: lasting results take time.

We underestimate the journey

We often set goals based on where we want to be, rather than what it will realistically take to get there.

You decide to lose weight and expect a dramatic change in a month. You start exercising and expect to feel fitter after a few sessions. You decide to eat better and expect your cravings to disappear overnight.

Then life happens. Progress slows. The scale doesn't move. You're tired. Your schedule changes. Suddenly, you wonder whether it's working.

But what if the problem isn't the process? What if your expectations are simply unrealistic?

When you expect a long-term change to happen in a short period, you set yourself up for frustration. You may give up just before the small, repeated actions begin to make a meaningful difference.

Think beyond the immediate result

I've spent years learning this lesson through movement and endurance training. You don't become a stronger runner because of one long run. You don't build endurance in a week. Every session contributes something, even when the progress isn't immediately visible.

The same applies to everyday life.

One healthy meal won't transform your health. One workout won't change your fitness. One early night won't undo months of poor sleep. And one good decision won't automatically replace an established habit.

But repeated decisions, over time, can change your direction.

The same is true in reverse. The habits that contribute to unwanted outcomes are often built gradually, too.

The goal isn't to change everything overnight. It's to start making different choices and keep making them long enough for them to become part of your life.

Stop looking for the shortcut

Quick fixes are attractive because they promise the outcome without requiring us to sit through the process.

But if your approach is so extreme that you cannot maintain it, what happens when you reach your goal? And what happens when you return to your usual routine?

The real question isn't simply, "How quickly can I get there?"

It's also, "Can I maintain this once I get there?"

You don't need to spend the rest of your life following a temporary diet, exercising in a way you hate or living by rules that don't fit your circumstances. You need to develop habits that work in the context of your actual life.

That takes experimentation, adjustment and time.

Your challenge this week

Take the goal you've been chasing and ask yourself:

  • Have I given myself a realistic timeline?

  • Am I expecting results before I've consistently practised the habits that create them?

  • Am I building something sustainable, or am I just trying to get through another short-term challenge?

  • If this takes twice as long as I expected, am I still willing to do the work?

Give yourself permission to build something that lasts.

Remember, you're not just working towards a number on a scale, a race medal or a particular clothing size. You're building a way of living that supports the person you want to become.

And that brings us to the next principle.

Coming next: Patience. Because even when you give yourself enough time, progress won't always happen on your schedule.

Movement + Nutrition = Life.
