I had the privilege of running the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon 10km Peace Run on Saturday, which is the fun run segment of this iconic race. The flat 10km route takes you along the beautiful Seapoint, Mouille Point, and Green Point promenade, with the stunning Atlantic Ocean on your right and the majestic Lion's Head and Table Mountain on your left.
With over 6,500 runners for this distance and another 14,000 participating in the trail runs and 5km events, the atmosphere was electric!
I started strong, maintaining a steady pace and comfortable speed. However, we faced a bit of a crosswind around the 4km mark and again at the turnaround point around 5.5/6km. At one point, I even had to chase after my hat!
My goal for this race was to push myself as hard as possible and ideally beat my 2023 time. After the hat incident, I felt a brief moment of frustration about my pace not being where I wanted it. But, as I always remind my clients and athletes: have grace with yourself.
After being sidelined for four months last year while travelling to places I have always wanted to and dealing with a torn quadricep muscle this year, just being able to run is an incredible achievement. It could have turned out very differently!
So, I pulled myself together and powered through the last section as hard as my body would allow. I crossed the finish line with a smile!
Looking at the results today, I’m thrilled to see that I finished in the top 10% of my age category and gender. To me, that’s a win!
Mission Accomplished!
